Winter Solstice

Particularly in the northern hemisphere where we live. And the Western Hemisphere where we are situated in Canada.

I'm constantly amazed with the cyclical way nature goes about its changes. Usually quiet and slow to give us time, if we are alert enough, to make preparations for the annual metamorphosis. Or to be surprised, challenged, or even killed if we're not astute.

The adaptations are nothing short of miraculous. You can miss the micro and the macro if you live in southern climes, or if you sequester yourself in your apartment. While so much is going on in the natural world. Awe inspiring.

As the world imperceptibly tilts slightly on its axis by a tiny degree at a time, from June 21st until December 21st. The day of the year our northern latitudes receive the least amount of sunlight in a 24 hour period. Then the very next day the days will start getting longer, albeit painfully slowly.

This decrease in sunlit hours manifests itself in our physiology, human, other animals and plants too. We mustn't forget two very important things, 1, we are animals and very much a part of nature whether we accept it or not, and 2 the planet itself is a living organism.

We should also concede we are not the top of the food chain in most senses. We are as fragile and at the mercy of the elements as an orchid or a rainforest songbird. Which should cause us to bear in mind the fragility of the habitat we depend on for our very survival. This should be on our minds when, as a society, or as a business we carefully balance progress with sustainability.

Without getting all deep and philosophical, we should take a sober step back to see our place in this infinite very incredulous yet impersonal Universe. What better day to take this step than on the day of the winter solstice, to examine priorities.

This isn't a new thing; the ancient Pagans had a name for it; "Yule". The tradition of bringing evergreen boughs into the home and illuminating them has been handed down through millennia.

It's emotionally important/critical for us to personally slow down our pace to coincide with the seasons. Maybe some quiet reflection including some gratitude; maybe some thoughtful planning for short term and long term future goals. Bears hibernate, frogs go into some sort of semi cryogenic state, many plants store their sustenance in roots or bulbs for their Spring re-emergence.

I plan on curling up in some cozy corner to rejuvenate my overtaxed psyche by expressing my thoughts through the written word. And to reflect and project in order to centre myself.

Whatever your situation, I hope you find a moments peace. I hope you are extended some kindness from whatever source.

Just know I will collectively be thinking of you and appreciating your sacrifices and struggles in my own way.

You are not alone.

Morning Coffee With My Emotional Support Dog

Like a seeing-eye dog, but for the Spirit; for the Soul.

And he's got it dialed in. He does it all without uttering a word.

Just a glance over the shoulder and he makes everything all right. A show of affection at just the right moment. And that goes both ways. Like most gifts; it's the reciprocal nature of it that deepens the appreciation.

It's not solely directed at me; he spreads it around. Everyone who meets him is instantly drawn to him. His quiet strength just seems to possess some sort of magnetic property.

His appeal is universal; he crosses lines of age, socio-economic status, ethnicity. And all so effortlessly. Language isn't an issue with him. His eyes express all he needs to convey.

You want to be in his presence. You just feel better…he lifts the yolk of your burden.

But he's not just some "downward dog" Namaste guru…oh no. His playful side is infectious.

He reminds us of our need to play and have fun too. Rejuvenation is not a serious business. He strikes that balance with his gentle reminders.

His physical presence is also reassuring. His physicality encourages me to climb higher; go farther; accomplish further goals. Some of that must be attributed to his Swiss mountain DNA.

And he is an all weather instructor. He's equally at home beside us curled up on a couch by the hearth as he is covered in snow braving the storm. Solid in every way.

I wish I were better at articulating his intangible strength of character.

There are those among us who just know; who get it. As do I.

A summer road trip for two couples in our convertibles. Sweeping views of massive fields. Crops beginning to ripen in the August sunshine. Mile after mile in southwestern Ontario, just inland from the north shore of Lake Erie. Of all the Great Lakes, Erie has the smallest volume of water. Our destination is the most Southerly point of land in Canada, Point Pellee. This point of land is on the same line of latitude as Northern California, and Rome. We had chosen the town of Leamington and a cozy family Motel for two nights as our base of operations for a ferry ride, visit to a winery, and bus tour of Pellee Island.

We got settled into our adjoining rooms. We began our planning for the next couple of days on the comfortable patio in front of our rooms.

Our new neighbours arrived on a bicycle built for two. Hoping to share travel stories over the course of the evening, we wave hello. Our greetings are barely acknowledged as he ducks into his room; his reluctant back seat rider dutifully trailing behind; offering a hesitant, almost apologetic hand wave. We continued assembling our itinerary, quickly recovering from the semi rebuff. No harm done. Nothing could diminish our enthusiasm.

When I say "recovering from" the perceived slight, I really mean building a profile in the most judgemental fashion I can summon. My, "turn the other cheek", and, accept people for who they are, Judeo-Christian ethics, had morphed over the course of an ever-hardening life to where I am now. Harsh, intolerant, cynical and suspicious. Heavily laced with a healthy dose of sarcasm; manifesting itself more to the sarcastic end of the spectrum than the outright physical violence scale. I've also found over time, judgement and sarcasm to be more hurtful and effective than simple physical violence when inflicted with surgical precision on an adversary.

Smug in his superiority that he is somehow better than others simply because he rides a bicycle; tandem no less. All that holier than thou; save the planet; "I'm environmentally friendly and you're a slathering Neanderthal, narrative". I presume he makes notes to remind himself of his superiority, as he strokes his salt & pepper beard in a vain attempt to give off an air of intellect.

In my mind, it wasn't so much his dismissive attitude towards us; we have pretty thick skin; not even the obvious emotional abuse his wife appears to be subjected to at his hands. What tipped the scale for me was when he sternly complained to the very diplomatic Motel owner, belittling her right in front of us, about some perceived deficiency with his room; the bar fridge wouldn't accommodate his celery slushy or the like.

His beleaguered, somewhat defeated wife cast a longing glance our way as we kibitzed on the patio of our motel room; in the same way a young impressionable girl in a cult longs to just be allowed to live a normal life outside the grasp of her controlling leader. Sadly, she's an emotional captive more so than a physical captive as evidenced by her resigned appeal.

If he is as surly to her as he was to the motel owner, then I feel sorry for her. We may witness his terrible behaviour fleetingly, but she must endure on a daily basis.

Maybe she secretively deals with his feeble ineffectual attempt at control by slipping powerful laxatives into his granola some mornings just to enjoy a break and a little chuckle in her otherwise unfulfilled day. On these tortuous rides, she is literally trapped in his slipstream breathing in the remnants of his environmentally friendly deodorant which falls short of its advertised effectiveness; along with methane emissions from his last vegan bean binge. Poor thing.

They peddle away, he in his euro inspired Lycra-spandex one piece riding outfit, complete with black mid-calf dress socks tragically pursuing his goal which he can't wait to relate to his disinterested co-workers.

We critical guests carry on in our usual shallow manner, enjoying our lives with gratitude; completely without pretense.

Our motel hosts continue creating a welcoming hospitable atmosphere for appreciative guests.

My hope is the Fucky McCrankys of this world will one day just carry on and go about their lives doing the right thing for the right reasons, sans judgment, so the rest of us can too.

My only response to those who would say, "there now, does that make you feel better?" Is a resounding "well, he started it"…

The Forest Ride

I totally get the concept of Tree of Life. There are stories and legends of the curative and spiritual powers of trees, singly, and in groups, stands, forests. There is an undeniable connection between trees and humans. Forests are the lungs of our planet.

"Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree"

I've a lot of respect for those words. They are from a poem by Joyce Kilmer.

I hadn't been a fan, I have since become one. I had come across that poem many years ago, and those words stayed with me.

This brings me to my ride. And a happy circumstance. A few years ago I found myself riding through a pristine forest on a thin black ribbon of bitumen. I was riding my ST1300 Sport Tourer…it was stretching its proverbial legs. I was exploring with no route or destination in mind. I was riding in one of my favourite areas where Tennessee meets North Carolina, then I saw the sign, carved out of hemlock; heritage raised letters…proclaiming "Joyce Kilmer National Forest". I had no idea of specifically where I was, and had no idea there was a National Forest named after that poet. It all gelled; this place, that author, my memories, my here and now.

One of life's special moments. As moments can be, on my motorcycle, alone with my thoughts inside the sanctity of my helmet.

Carry it in Your Heart

Whatever "it" may be…

For each of us, it's something personal. Unique to our own experience. It may be the spirit of Christmas, our own religious beliefs. It may be a loved one. Parents. A Grandchild. A pet's unconditional love. A fond memory. The laughter of a baby.

It may be a dream of how you want to live your life. Whatever it may be for you..carry it in your heart forever, or for as long as you wish. It's your heart, and it's your dream. No one else's.

And why our heart?

Our heart is a vessel. It's chambers hold and gently distribute the liquid which carries our life. But it holds more...much more. It holds hopes and dreams. It holds this intangible love. As powerful a force in the universe, and as little understood, as gravity.

It's not to be entrusted to your mind. Your brain is too analytical and dispassionate for such delicate matters. These things shouldn't be left up to the mind. No, the heart is really the only place for such things.

Things of such importance can only be sequestered in the heart. To be kept close to the soul, the spirit.

Yes, keep getting up and going to work. Continue paying your mortgage. Raise your children; love your spouse. Don't stop addressing life's ups and downs.

But, when you are alone with your thoughts, or when a cruel world closes the doors to your options, you can retrieve it from your depths to bring comfort.

Never, ever let it go. Jealously guard it. It may sustain you one day when nothing else will.

Ride to Coboconk

My buddy texted. He and a few other friends were ramping up for a ride leading up to the Labour Day long weekend.

Meet at the LCBO parking lot in Washago the next day at 9 am with a tank full of gas.

A TransAlp; BMW RT1200, Huskvarna 901 Nordin, Yamaha FJR1300; a GoldWing DCT, and me on my Suzuki V-Strom. An eclectic group.

Greg had devised a scenic route. We did Cooper's Fall's Rd., Housey's Rapids, Uffington, 118, 11, 117 to Baysville.

North on 2, Brunel Rd., then N/E on South Portage Rd., to Dwight.

We took 35 through Canarvan, Minden, Norland and into Coboconk.

It turned out the restaurant they thought was in Coby was actually in Minden. With a little backtracking we finally settled in for a greeting on the patio of the old Dominion Hotel, featuring (as the sign declared) elegant rooms. Never did check them out, but I don't doubt their elegance.

We headed back by way of 45, Monch Rd. then 169 north. We took Switch Rd. with a brief stop for a friendly beer.

Then we dispersed; me going north through Washago and home to Bracebridge.

Sunny and cool. Perfect day. Good guys.

How I Came About the Name

Kilty Switch Kronikles

First and foremost, it popped up on the Weather App on my cell phone. I was travelling between towns heading home. When I checked the weather, I expected to see my town or the neighbouring town show up on the screen of my phone. Neither...Kilty Switch popped up. I thought my my App was mistaken.

The weather was about right for my location, and it was the same as at my home a few kilometers away.

This tweaked my curiosity. Google was a bit vague. Further investigation revealled Kilty Switch to be a bonified Ghost Town. And who would have guessed? And right at the edge of town. I was able to locate a narrow dirt road, and believe it or not, it had it;s own street sign. It led me to an abandoned gravel pit of sorts. Dead end. and to add insult to injury, I got stuck...on my "Adventure" motorcycle; how deflating.

It turns out there was once a thriving farm there, but no post office and nothing of a community of homes. However, further inquiry revealed there had once been an old railway siding there. Probably built to accommodate a wooden water tower for era steam trains to refill their boilers. In railroad terminology, such a siding required what os known as a "switch". Thus Kilty Switch.

I haven't yet discovered the origin of the origin of the "Kilty" portion of the name, but probably stems from a Scottish reference. As I am of Scottish Gaelic descent, I have usurped "Kilty Switch" for my website name, and my blog is called "Kilty Switch Kronikles"
